The main unsolved riddle of Abovyan studies is his mysterious disapperance.
As a result of the Russo-Turkish war of 1828-1829 began the mass emigration of the Armenians. About 90000 Armenians forcedly deserted their homeland. The tsarist officials’ anti-armenian policy had a bad influence on a free-thinker Abovyan.
It is very imporatant to understand Abovyan’s social-political views at that historical period. Abovyan’s inspringing attitude towards Russia gave rise to preconiditons of ideological turn-cultural-educatvie programmes of Abovyan were failed, as well as the Armenians aspirations for reconstruction of own statehood. Abovyan’s disappearance on 2 of April, 1848 was a result of revolt against tsarist persecutive policy towards the Armenians. Up to now the circumstances of his disappearance are still anknown.
A. Bakounts thought that Abovyan left in 1848 to take part in the European Revolutions.
To academician Ashot Hovhanessyan mind Abovyan committed suicide. A well known abovyanologist Pion Hakobyan was also inclined to the version of suicide or having lived disguised somewhere.
Historian V. Avetyan convinced that Abovyan was killed by Turk debtors.
Among people the versions of suicide and killing were spread.
Historian Vladimir Ghazaryan asserted that Abovyan exiled to Siberia.
Another argument about probability of exile was given by the teacher of Theological Academy of Echmiadzin Stepan Kanayants.
