In the new Armenian literature Abovyan was the first to create a genre of lirical poem ‘The song of Aghasi’. Both the living, spoken language of the poem and the use of some priciples of bard poems signified one more step to the source of a national poetry.
Abovyan also wrote satirical poems. In his poem ‘Hazarpeshen’ the author arise the problems of social and political injustice.
